Event description: On the occasion of World Wetlands Day, Haritima, the Environmental Awareness Society of Hansraj College, organized a speaker session on the theme “Reviving Wetlands: Community and Conservation Efforts.” The session featured Prof. Suresh Babu, Director of the Centre for Urban Ecology and Sustainability at Ambedkar University, as the esteemed speaker. Prof. Babu highlighted the ecological significance of wetlands, emphasizing that they are not just water bodies but complex ecosystems that support biodiversity, regulate climate, and provide essential resources. He elaborated on the misconceptions surrounding wetlands, where they are often overlooked or degraded due to urban expansion. Drawing from his first-hand experience at the Dheerpur Wetland Park, Prof. Babu shared an inspiring journey of ecological restoration. He and his team successfully transformed a barren landscape into a thriving biodiversity hotspot through dedicated conservation efforts, community engagement, and sustainable practices. His insights encouraged attendees to recognize the role of wetlands and become active participants in their preservation. The session provided valuable perspectives on community-driven conservation, urging students and environmental enthusiasts to take proactive steps in safeguarding wetlands. The event concluded with an engaging Q&A session, where students discussed policy measures, restoration techniques, and also took an oath to protect and work in the safeguard of the wetlands .
