Name of the event: Plantation Drive
Date of the event: 19/07/2024
The campus of Hansraj College, University of Delhi, is already recognized for being lush green, clean, and beautiful. The college took another big stride toward making it environmentally sustainable by participating in the “Grow a Tree for Life”, an initiative run by Prof. Dinabandhu Sahoo, Head of the Department of Botany at the University of Delhi, on 19th July, Friday. This event was organized by the Garden Committee, chaired by Dr. Shailu Singh and Haritima, the Environmental Awareness Committee chaired by Prof. Monika Koul. The campaign dealt with the importance of growing trees within the campus for environmental sustainability. On the occasion, the front lawns of Hansraj College were decorated with a variety of plants such as Jacaranda, Cassia, and Delonix trees, all known for their splendid blooms of violet, yellow, and red. Prof. Rama, Principal of Hansraj College, along with Prof. Sahoo initiated the plantation, which was done symbolically to reflect the commitment and desire of the college towards a greener campus. Prof. Sahoo said that such initiatives are important and the plantation of trees will have a healthier and sustainable environment. He motivated everyone to actively participate in making the campus greener. “Grow a Tree for Life” saw active participation not only from students, but also from teachers and gardeners. This was more of a collective effort toward the sustenance of the environment; hence, the move embodied Hansraj College’s commitment towards transforming the institute into a greener and healthier campus, revamping the need for community involvement if sustainability goals are to be reached. This is a landmark event in the continuum of imparting concern towards nature and making Hansraj College an example for other institutions to follow in sustainable practices.
