Event description:
Haritima, the Environmental Awareness Society of Hansraj College, organized a speaker session on the theme “Design Thinking Workshop: Converting Temple Waste to Value-Added Products.” The session featured Dr. Ambika, Associate Professor, Chemistry, HRC, and Dr. D. Srikala, Associate Professor, Physics, HRC as the esteemed resource persons. Dr. Monika Koul, Convener, Haritima, presided over the session. Dr. Ambika and Dr. Srikala discussed what constitutes waste, how to manage it, and the significance of floral waste, focusing on its transformation into useful materials. A demonstration showcased the process of converting discarded marigold petals, pea flowers, and the bark of the arjuna tree into natural dyes. These dyes were then used to color cotton sheets, emphasizing their efficacy and health benefits in contrast to harmful, carcinogenic synthetic dyes. Their insights encouraged attendees to recognize the utility of floral waste, which accounts for about 16% of total river and water pollutants. The session provided a fresh outlook on how simple citizen actions can contribute to waste mitigation.
