Plant a tree. Plant a hope.

Nelson Henderson has duly spoken, “The true meaning of life is to plant trees under whose shadow you do not wish to sit.” This planet is our home.  We did not inherit it from our ancestors, rather we have borrowed it from our children. It’s our duty to take care of it.

Haritima, the environmental society of Hansraj College, believes that planting a tree is planting a hope and, in this regard, we set in motion our project, ‘A Million More’ on 1st January 2020. This project’s aims to plant 10 lakh trees over a span of 5 years across the National Capital, New Delhi. It might appear like an unachievable number, but small acts of contribution, when multiplied by millions of people, can transform the world. This project intends to bring college students and environment enthusiasts together from different parts of the nation and give them a prospect to do something extraordinary for the environment. The initial course of action in ensuring a greener and sustainable future for everyone is to plant more and more trees. This is what A Million More Project envisions.

Since its inception, many successful events have been conducted under this project. It embarked on its journey with a Plantation Drive organized in the Hansraj Hostel Campus in collaboration with the NGO Kalpavriksha.  Another Plantation Drive was organized in SDMC School, Sector 5, Dakshinpuri in collaboration with the NGO ‘Youth Action Hub‘.

These strenuous times of pandemic have in no way affected the sailing of our ship, rather, the transit to online mode has made the voyage even smoother by including people from all over the country in this initiative by urging them to plant trees and saplings in their own homes. Our project is no more restricted to just the Capital. This project also effectuated two ‘Adopt a Plant Challenge’ drives which persuaded people to plant saplings inside or in the vicinity of their houses. Initiatives of ‘Green Diwali’ and ‘Green Valentine’ were also taken which propelled everyone to celebrate festivals and special days in an eco-friendly manner.

As more and more people join us and contribute to this noble cause, we expect to achieve our goal very soon. Further, the plantation of 10 lakh trees is not the limit, it is just the beginning of a big revolution. It is the need of the hour.
