Event Description: Haritima: The Environmental Awareness Society, under its Project Mowgli initiative, organized an enriching visit to the Sanjay Gandhi Animal Care Centre, one of the largest and oldest animal shelters in India. The visit provided an opportunity to observe and interact with various animals, including dogs, cats, cows, buffaloes, and birds.
Our team spent quality time with the dogs housed in spacious chambers, each accommodating around 50 dogs. These chambers were thoughtfully designed to provide comfort and safety for the animals. We engaged with the dogs, playing with them, which brought immense joy to both the animals and our team. The interaction highlighted the importance of empathy and care for stray and abandoned animals.
We also observed other sections of the shelter, including the bird and cat enclosures, from a distance. Unfortunately, due to the need to maintain the privacy and well-being of the animals, particularly the birds and monkeys, access to their areas was restricted. This decision underscores the shelter’s dedication to ensuring a stress-free environment for animals, especially those considered wild or vulnerable.
Although we were slightly disappointed not to interact with all the animals, the visit was a deeply fulfilling experience. It reinforced the significance of animal welfare and the critical role shelters play in providing sanctuary and care. This visit left us inspired to contribute further to the cause of protecting and uplifting animals, aligning with the mission of Project Mowgli to foster coexistence between humans and animals.
